Epson PX650

Updated:

This guide has now been superceded by a new video installation guide for the PX660.

The information below is still relevant and useful but obviously we've included more information in the video guide.

Original Guide

As with other printers, the PX650 shares many similar traits and design features with the RX560, R360 and any other printers that have a trapdoor located in the front of the printer.

The PX650 is also badged in other countries as the:

  • TX650

This guide indicates the primary features specific to the PX650 while also drawing on the information and images already available from other printers.

As with the RX560, this is another "trapdoor" style printer but the location of this trapdoor/hatch is in the front of the printer.

PX650-Location of the service hatch/trapdoor

Locating The Trapdoor (Access hatch)

As noted earlier the PX650 has its trapdoor located in the front of the printer, to the right of the paper output area.

Picture #1 (left) shows the location of the both the hatch and the release catch, located above the hatch.

PX650 - Release the catch (RX690 shown)

Release the Catch

The trapdoor is held in place by flexible plastic catch with a small hole in the centre/top

Releasing this requires a screwdriver (or similar) to push in, then lever (as shown in picture #2 - left).

PX650 - Inside the trapdoor/access-hatch

Trapdoor Removed (How it looks inside the PX650)

Picture #3 (left) shows inside the hatch on a PX650, once the trapdoor/access-hatch cover is removed.

The green arrow indicated the direction the tube needs to be pulled to release it (as further described in step #4 below)

PX650 - Trapdoor removed. Release waste tube

Trapdoor Removed. Release the Waste Tube

With the screw removed you can remove the trapdoor/hatch itself and see the waste tube connected to the internal waste pad holder.

To release the waste tube itself you gently pull the tube away from the tank, as indicated by the green arrow in picture #4 (Left).

PX650 - Connect OctoInkjet waste kit

Connect Waste Kit

Now that the waste tube is free you just need to connect it to your waste kit using the connector provided.

Note: Because the tube comes out of the front of the printer and the hatch is located behind the output tray's closed position, it will not be possible to close your printer output tray.

Position the tube so it can exit without folding or crimping the tube

Modifying the Hatch Cover (Trapdoor)

After you have freed the tube you then follow the standard process of connecting your waste ink kit using the barbed connector and modifying your trapdoor.

Note: I have copied in instructions from the R240 from this point on. The process is more or less exactly the same so these R240 steps should still provide ample information to complete the task.

IMPORTANT: Any kinking or folding of the tube will restrict ink flow to the waste tank so make sure the tube bends gently and is in the correct position.

Replace trapdoor

The image (left) shows how things should look* with the connector inside the printer, and the trapdoor replaced (*on the R240)

Note: On the RX650 the tube would exit from the right/bottom of the door as that's the best location to allow the tube to bend behind the trapdoor without kinking/folding.

PX650 - Waste ink tank installed

Finished

Now you just connect your waste tank to the end of the tubing and then test the kit is working (if you haven't already).

You are now ready to reset and use your printer again

Resetting the waste ink counter

Neither, the PX650 nor the TX650 are not supported by the SSC utility but a version of the appropriate adjustment utility is available free of charge to any OctoInkjet customers who purchase a waste ink kit.
