Payment option changes

Posted on 13th Jul 2017 @ 12:25:34 PM

Payment options are being overhauled to reduce costs, improve overall efficiency and take advantage of maturing services such as Transferwise.

These changes are as follow:

  • Sagepay payment gateway/option to be retired/removed
  • Stripe payment gateway updated
  • Bank transfer (ACH/Swift/Wire/BACS/IBAN) options updated
  • Australian Dollar payment via Paypal only
  • Canadian Dollar payment via Paypal only

Sagepay Retirement

The cost of running this gateway (and associated merchant accounts), coupled with technical issues caused by International authentication systems has pushed us towards retiring this service.

The service has already been pushed down the payment option list and will be retired sometime in mid-August.

Stripe Retained and Upgraded

Stripe is proving more reliable, less administration intensive and provides more up to date fraud prevention tools. We're also able to reduce our costs when dealing with International payment in USD and Euros.

Bank Transfer Upgrade/Improvements

Thanks to new service options, we're now able to accept payment in Euros and US Dollars using traditional bank transfer routes such as ACH (USD) and IBAN, all through Transferwise. We're definitely recommending non-GBP customers consider Transferwise as an alternative to traditional wire-transfer and Priority payment services. The savings are quite substantial.

Currency Changes  (CAD, AUD)

Due to the minimal use of both these currencies we've opted to support for Canadian and Australian dollars through Paypal alone.
Paypal can accept credit/debit card payments for these currencies, without needing an account, so this should suffice for the limited number of customers who prefer to pay in these currencies

Payments by Phone

Currently we use Sagepay to provide an option to accept payments over the phone but, as Sagepay is being retired, we are looking at alternatives to decide whether it is worth replacing this with an alternative solution.

Overall Changes

The primary aim of the above changes has been to:

  • reduce the problems customers have experienced when making payment
  • improve detection and reduce the incidence of fraud
  • reduce the overall cost of accepting payments at a time when costs are rising across the board.
