Pro-10 inks: June/July 15' Update #2

Posted on 2nd Jul 2015 @ 11:36:12 PM

We have amended our results regarding Pro-10 compatiblity and work we've been doing over June/July (2015):

Profiling vs' Canon standard

[Updated: July 24th]

No sense in beating about the bush here. Canon standard profiles are not really suitable for these inks. Although passable results with Matt and Lustre media are possible, we would definitely recommend use of a matching profile of development of a custom profile, particularly for Glossy, Semi-Gloss papers.

Work has now begun on profiles for the papers we currently have available. The full list will be available over time but if you have any papers not on our list that you'd like added, please contact us for a profiling target and instructions.

Adhesion (ie: ink sticking to the paper)

[Updated: July 22nd]

Having slept on things we decided to try something difference with the "Clear Coating Area" setting and using the Kodak Pro Glossy 255gsm paper as one of the problem candidates, we decided to see if setting the Clear Coating Area to "Overall" would degrade or improve the adhesion issue.

The result was a significant improvement with the Chroma Optimiser coating providing a protective layer over the ink even without allowing the paper to fully dry.

Media Compatibility

[Updated: Sept 7th]

All Glossy type papers require the use of Clear Coating Area setting "Overall" and sufficient drying time to protect against scratch/ink-scratch damage to the print.
All papers are producing excellent results when profiled.

  • Harmen - Hahnemuehle Canvas:
No adhesion issues. Beautiful results using Harmen profile for Pro-10 Canvas.
  • Inkpress Adhesive Vinyl:
No adhesion issues. Matte photo paper media setting + "Canon Pro-10 2/32 Matte Photo Paper" ICM Profile, produces good results albeit muted colours
  • Kodak Pro Glossy 255 & Imajet Photo Gloss RC 240gsm papers
As per comments above, clear coating required to avoid scratch damage.
  • Kodak Pro 255 & Imajet Ultra 9 - 300 Glacier :: Lustre papers
Adhesion is good with minimal issues. Excellent results when viewed under natural light. Our custom profile providing a high quality black & white print.
  • Imajet Matte Photo paper
No adhesion issues. Custom profile produces some great results
  • FotoSpeed paper range
Generic profiles (for each paper type) now available

Potential Issues?

Mixing: None
There are no incompatibilities with the original and compatible inks.

Clogging: Minimal
So far the only issue of any note was that the PGI-72GY ink needed a manual clean after 5 months of non-use on one printhead. This is a pretty extreme case but the issue was easily resolved and such clogging doesn't occur overnight or within what we'd consider normal periods of inactivity. The PGI-72MBK was second on the list but any blocked nozzles were cleared with a single standard printhead clean process. All other inks were immediately available even after 5 months, with no clogging at all.

Pending Short Term:

  • Custom Profiles for all Fotospeed media (awaiting results)
  • Custom Profiles for selection of Matt and Lustre type media (completed - pending instruction write up)

We'll also be talking to the manufacturer about progress on the version 2 inkset that is also in development, particularly to see if the issues with gloss can be resolved for the inks most affected.

Further information will be made available in due course...
