Troubleshoot: CLI-42 – REdSETTER

The CLI-42 Chip REdSETTER is able to reset cartridge chips on original/OEM (Canon) cartridge chips such that ink monitoring does not need to be disabled.

Additionally the functionality of the fail-safe prism is retained for all cartridges such that the printer will stop if it detects the prism has been empty for long enough that the sponge is approaching the end of its available ink supply.

Chip Not Resetting?

These REdSETTERs take a little longer than previous models but most problems can be resolved using the following instructions:

  1. Ensure the chip is making full contact with the four pins located in the opening in the unit base.
  2. Check the USB cable is plugged into a socket that has power (ie: it’s turned on!)
  3. Push the cartridge down into the base (as per instructions) and hold in place for at least 5 seconds to allow the reset to take place.
  4. Refer to the instruction video to check you’re using the unit correctly

Ink Monitoring Disabled? – Potential Issue:

There is a potential issue that has recently come to light (December 2013) that indicates the ink monitoring may remain partially disabled in a specific set of combined circumstances. These are the following:

  • Cartridge has reached empty
  • Option to continue with “Ink monitoring disabled” has been accepted for that cartridge
  • Cartridge has subsequently been reset (using the REdSETTER)
    …and…
  • Cartridge has been refilled

In this instance it appears the cartridge ink monitoring will be indicate full but it will not gracefully reduce as ink is used up. Instead it appears to reach the point where the prism fail safe kicks in and the user is notified that the cartridge ink is low.

At present this issue is being investigaged further but it seems cartridges/chips are not affected if ink monitoring has not been disabled for those particular cartridges/chips.

Advice/Work-around

If you have already accepted the option to disable the ink monitoring then at present it seems you can:

  • Accept that ink monitoring will notify you when the cartridge is nearing empty
    ..or..
  • Purchase a new cartridge that has not been “disabled” in the above way and ensure you do not disable ink monitoring in the future (not that you’re likely to if you have a REdSETTER).

This issue is not critical and simply indicates that a new quirk to the chip and firmware design/coding has been applied so

Do [you] have the correct unit?

There is some confusion regarding what the CLI-42 REdSETTER looks like because of a video that demonstrated a PGI-9 REdSETTER to basically fake availability, while stock arrived with the supplier.

The correct unit has a white-ish/grey trigger in a red plastic housing and NOT a black trigger and slot.
